This is a huge national park occupying around 186 square kilometer area. Out of this, 33 km belongs to Baltic coastline between Leba and Rowy. The park has been named after a Slav tribe that is believed to be the original inhabitants of this coastline till 19th century. The park, because of its diversity was included in UNESCO’s list of Biosphere Reserves in 1977. The idea to create a national park was mooted way back in 1946 in a conference held in Leba but the park came into existence only in January 1967. Out of 18000 hectare, 10000 hectares is occupied by water while 4600 hectares belongs to forests. Out of this, 2500 hectares of forest land is strictly protected where tourists cannot enter.

The relief features found in the park are a result of combined activities of Scandinavian glaciers and Baltic Sea. There are few high hills in the park that got left behind through glaciers. One such hill is called woRokol that is popular among the tourists because of the panoramic view that tourists get of the entire area when they reach the top.

Physical activities of glaciers and Baltic Sea resulted in the formation of sand dunes that also separate lakes from the sea. There are even migrating dunes inside the park that surprise those who have previously visited the park. Water bodies in the park occupy nearly 55% area of the park. Some of the famous lakes are Gardno Lake, Lebsko Lake, and Dolgie Wiekie Lake.
Słowiński National Park is known for its huge variety of bird species that are over 250 in number. The high number of bird species is owing to rich diversity in physical features of the park. Birds feel secure in the park because of the difficult access points. Some birds that are very popular in the park are sea eagles, golden eagle, swans, ducks, raven, eagle owl etc.
The park has more than hundred walking trails with all necessary facilities and emergency help that may be required by the tourists. Tourists are allowed into most of the areas of the park. However they are not allowed into lakes. Lake Leba is the solitary lake where visitors are allowed to sail on boats. They can come from their apartments in Krakow on one day trips around the lakes.
The park has much to offer to nature lovers who do not miss this place when in Poland.
